Pentecostal Teaching – Can I get an Amen?!

TED TalksI’ve only recently discovered Chris Emdin (http://chrisemdin.com/, twitter: @chrisemdin), known for #hiphoped, or Hip Hop Education, but what he has to say in the following TED Talk resonates resoundingly with me as an Educator. I really can’t help but wonder how this didn’t end up in last week’s post – 50 Ted Talks Every Educator Should Check Out (2014 Edition).
Have you ever seen that teacher in front of the class, who has their students’ rapt attention, they’re hanging on every word, they’re laughing, they’re engaging, which means – they’re learning. They have a kind of ‘magic’, yes? Emdin has a term for this type of education – Pentecostal Teaching. They use their body like a rapper giving a concert, they read their ‘audience’s’ every mood and then mix up their presentation in response. They make their classes interesting, like being in a ‘black church’ (Emdin’s words). They get their students to respond – can I get an Amen with that? I think that there needs to be more of the Pentecostal Teaching going on and a whole lot less of the lecturing – and this can only come via modeling and training. Here’s the video – it’s 6 1/2 minutes of awesome:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3ddtbeduoo
